The ancient Flinders Ranges, South Australia is the largest mountain range in the area. Rising from the rugged yet beautiful landscapes of Australia's Outback, the Flinders Ranges are actually made up of a series of discontinous mountains located northwest of Adelaide that stretches for over four hundred kilometres.

The Flinders Ranges, South Australia are one of Australia's most important national landscapes and there are several different areas that are enjoy a protected status. Chief among them is the Flinders Ranges National Park, which holds some of the ranges' most popular sights. This is where you'll find St. Mary Peak, the highest point in the Flinders Ranges, South Australia.

Wilpena Pound, a gigantic natural amphitheatre, is the park's central attraction. You can take a plane tour for a higher perspective on this natural wonder; if you enjoy a more hands-on approach the Fliders Ranges, South Australia provides no end of walking, cycling and horse-riding trails. The Heyson and Mawson trails both run for hundreds of kilometres along the ranges.

In the northern reaches of the Flinders Ranges are the Vulkathunha-Gammon Ranges National Park and the observatory that takes full advantage of the unspoiled skies of the Arkaroola wilderness sanctuary. Afar cry from the lush rainforests of Australia's tropical north, Arkaroola is populated with arid-weather plants and animals like red kangaroos, the endangered yellow-footed rock wallaby and many different bird species.

If you visit the southern parts of the Flinders Ranges, South Australia try not to miss the Pichi Richi railway. A bit of advance planning may be needed to ride the charming steam locomotive through the Pichi Richi pass and the historic towns of South Australia, as the train only runs on certain days.

There is, of course, lots to do even if you miss the train. Races at Beltana and Blinman cater to the sporting set and the Brachina Gorge Geological Trail delves deep into the natural history and evolution of the Australian Continent.

Some of the activities are 2 day tours, up to 21 day tours taking in the Flinders Ranges as part of the trip. All tour operators have extensive knowledge of the Flinders Ranges and will make sure your tour is as memorable as possible.
